Looking Back. Spring Term Review

13 Apr 2016

Looking Back.....
Highlights from the Spring Term 2016

The Spring Term was as busy as ever! Sporting events included football, rugby, athletics and water polo. Our Indoor Athletics Team were the overall winners of the London Championships at Crystal Palace and were runners up in the Havering Annual Sports Awards, having been crowned primary school team of the year on three occasions. Congratulations to Saint Edwards Water Polo Team who were awarded team of the year for 2016. Our football team were the runners up in the central league, beat Engayne Primary School in the Havering quarter final and will play Wykeham Primary in the semi-final after Easter.

Our choir commenced rehearsals for the Having Music Festival and will perform at the Queen’s Theatre in June. A number of our choir members are also involved in the Havering College Community Project which will be staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End on Sunday May 1st. All children continue to have weekly music lessons with Mr Linham and we hope to showcase some of their work before the end of the summer term. In addition to music Years 3, 4 and 5 have also enjoyed dance workshops with a specialist teacherdeveloping their work in Physical Education.

As well as our usual curriculum activities, summarised on the school website; Year 3 enjoyed an exciting Hindu Workshop as part of their work in Religious Education and visited the Southend Sealife Centre to support work in Science. Year 4 visited Stubbers on an Orienteering Adventure and also participated in Re-Cycling Workshops to help them understand the need to protect our environment. At the beginning of term Year 6 were challenged by an excellent Road Safety presentation which emphasised the importance of road safety and the danger of drivers using their mobile phone whilst driving. Their Spring Term culminated in an enjoyable Tudor Day which was enjoyed by all. I am sure when they visit Hever Castle next week they will know more than the tour guides! Year 5 have their trip to Duxford to look forward to this term as part of their World War 2 Project.

Staff and children are rising to the challenge of the new national curriculum and as was explained at the meetings for parents last term, expectations haven risen considerably in all year groups. The school has been visited on three occasions from inspectors from the Local Authority who have visited all classes to observe teaching and learning.  Feedback has been excellent with reports highlighting the high standards of work and behaviour throughout the school. In February the school was awarded the National Coaching Award in recognition of the work being undertaken by staff and pupils. This was followed in March by the school receiving the prestigious NACE Challenge Award. The logos are now proudly displayed on our school home page. The school also received a Health and Safety Audit and passed with flying colours.

Attendance for the Spring Term was  96.82%   with 160 pupils  achieving 100% attendance. Well done everyone. The class with the highest attendance last term was Class 3H with 98.23%

Congratulations to staff and children for such an excellent term. A a big thank you too to you, our parents for your continued support and encouragement and to our P.A. for organising the discos and Easter Fayre.
